New approach for school spaces: The LEARNITECT project has launched – European cooperation for 21st-century learning environments
The LEARNITECT – Meeting of Innovative Learning Design and Inclusive Learning Spaces Erasmus+ project was launched in autumn 2023 with the aim of supporting teachers, school leaders, and schools in transforming their learning and community spaces to meet the needs of the 21st century. This two-year international collaboration brings together Hungarian, Italian, and Portuguese partners to promote inclusion, digitalisation, and the development of STEM education.
A school is more than classrooms: it is a community space, a meeting point for children and teachers. If designed well, spaces can inspire learning and strengthen the sense of community.
– said Tibor Dőri, President of the Hungarian Association for Digital Education.
Objectives of the project
The overarching aim of LEARNITECT is to ensure that schools, by renewing their learning spaces, become genuine centres of community and learning where students, teachers, and leaders alike can thrive and grow. The project builds on three main objectives:
- Diagnosis and feedback: In the first stage, questionnaires and interviews will be used to assess how teachers and school leaders perceive their school spaces. The results will form the basis of an international study that shows which factors support or hinder learning and community-building. Throughout this process, participating schools will receive valuable and direct feedback on their own strengths and opportunities.
- Knowledge sharing: The findings from the diagnosis and school visits will be widely disseminated through a podcast series, an interview booklet, studies, and online platforms. The goal is to provide teachers and school leaders with practical examples, proven methods, and inspiring ideas that they can adapt in their own institutions. By doing so, the project will help build a community of practice and facilitate international exchange of knowledge.
- Architectural models: In the final phase, innovative and sustainable architectural studies will be developed, demonstrating how learning and community spaces can be adapted to modern pedagogical principles. These models will provide concrete recommendations on how classrooms and community areas can be transformed into inclusive, digitally supported, and student well-being–oriented environments. The plans will serve not only as inspiration but also as practical guidelines for schools.
The project’s deliverables will include: questionnaire surveys and a comprehensive study, school visit diaries, edited interviews and an international interview booklet, podcast episodes and related articles, as well as detailed architectural studies and visualisations.
We believe that by combining pedagogical and architectural expertise, we can create truly inspiring, inclusive, and modern learning environments.
– emphasised Bertalan Péter Farkas, managing director of Learnitect Design.
